Grey Gardens, based on the 1975 Maysles brothers’ documentary of the same name, follows the lives of Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale (‘Big Edie’) and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale (‘Little Edie’)– Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s aunt and cousin respectively. Set in their once-opulent East Hampton homestead – the Grey Gardens of the title – this scathingly original musical tracks the progression of the women’s lives from their exalted status as rich and socially polished aristocrats to their eventual, largely isolated, dilapidated existences. ion company member Kim Strassburger directs.
The ion production features company member Linda Libby* – recipient of two San Diego Craig Noel awards for her work with ion (Request Programme and Gypsy), and San Diego favorite Annie Hinton* making her ion theatre debut. Returning to the ion stage are Kevane La’Marr Coleman (Angels in America; Chicago: A Speakeasy Cabaret), Ralph Johnson (Gypsy), Emma Rasse (Punk Rock) and Ruff Yeager (Wonder Wounded Heroes). Also making their ion stage intros are Charles Evans, Charlene Koepf, and Lou Rasse. Janie Prim (Sondheim Valentine) is musical director. The creative team includes ion’s executive artistic director Claudio Raygoza (scenic), ion company members Karin Filijan (lighting) and Melanie Chen (sound), returnees Michael Mizerany (choreography), David Medina (props) and newcomer Erick Sundquist (costumes). The Stage Manager is Maria Orozco, production Manager is Shawn Faber and ion’s producing artistic director Glenn Paris produces.
