ion proudly presents the West Coast premiere of JOHN BALL’S IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT
Award-winning artist Francis Gercke returns to ion in his first directorial assignment with the company
San Diego, CA – Ion concludes its seventh full season with an electric and provocative stage-work that reexamines the racism and intolerance consuming the American South of the 1960s. A hot August night lies heavy over the small town of Argo, Alabama as a dead white man is discovered. The local police – in desperation – arrest a black man passing through town. However, the police soon discover that their prime suspect is in fact an expert homicide detective from California who eventually becomes the racially tense community’s best hope in solving a brutal murder that is turning up no witnesses, no motives, and no clues. Acclaimed emerging playwright Matt Pelfrey has adapted the award-winning book that inspired the Emmy-winning TV Series and Oscar-winning film featuring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. Guest artist Francis Gercke takes on his first directing assignment at ion having been featured in the company’s acclaimed productions of Grace and Hurlyburly.
Featured in the production are ion company members Brian Mackey & Rachael VanWormer, ion alums Jessica John (Angels in America) and Jake Rosko (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo), and making their ion debuts are Fred Harlow, Eric Poppick, Vimel Sephus, Tom Stephenson, Tim West and Eddie Yaroch. The creative team lists company members Karin Filijan (lighting design) and Melanie Chen (sound design), and returning artists Brian Redfern (scenic design), Andrea Fields (properties design) and Mary Summerday (costumes). The Stage Manager is Lauren Dougharty, the Executive Producer is Glenn Paris with Claudio Raygoza serving as Producer.
